Series | A Land of the Great Maghreb – Morocco
A cyclist watches the sunset from the deck of Anfa Place in Casablanca, Morocco.
When I chose to go to the Land of the Great Maghreb, I chose Morocco. We landed in Casablanca. It is the country’s financial capital and therefore more modern than the rest of the country.
Anfa Place a walking plaza and shopping boulevard lining the Atlantic ocean is the representation of this juxtaposed modernity with traditional. However as Ghali, our guide in Casablanca puts it, the fore is more the outward appearance than the core which remains Moroccan. And it is true. We’ve been three days here so far and the hospitality of these warm people has not failed us.
And now that the fore is covered we move on to Rabat, Fes and Marrakesh, the imperial cities of the Morocco. It is a country seeped in ancient culture, heritage and richness of traditions. They endure to this day in spite of a colonial past.
