Once upon a time..

Once upon a time..

Ancient #havelis and temples have their own charm even if we neglect their upkeep. As it goes, this one too comes with a #story.
.
Featured here is the haveli of one of the Sardars and confidantes of the Peshwe of Pune, who accompanied him on the journey north once the Brits took over the seat of power. They constructed this haveli when the sardar family decided to settle in Karwi, near Chitrakoot, in #UttarPradesh.

The lush bed of #yellow #flowers added delicacy to the evening sitout which comprised of a small courtyard and stone benches with parrot carved on the backrest.
.
Also featured are the pillars and mandap of the Ganesh temple they built for worship. Now under the ‘protection’ of ASI.
.
The image reflecting the sky, is of a 7 storied water well. Every summer when the heat became unbearable, the family shifted to the lower most floor nearest to the now receeding water. As soon as the monsoon set in and the well started to fill up, they kept moving a floor upwards till it was time to move back into the haveli.
.
Long after these structures are gone the stories will remain. Of times when slow was just how it was done.
